In a bid to reduce operating expenditure, TIM Brasil and Telefonica’s local unit Vivo are holding talks over a potential 2G & 4G infrastructure sharing agreement.

Vivo revealed that the companies were discussing a “grid model” for sharing 2G infrastructure, while they were exploring sharing 4G assets in urban regions with a population of less than 30,000. In these areas, they would cooperate to provide 4G services via the 700MHz frequency band.

The operators said that once the sharing models had been established, they could be extended to more populated areas, as well as being applied to different frequencies and technologies. They added that they were looking into other ways of cooperating to reduce their operational expenses.

TIM Brasil and Vivo additionally confirmed that all the initiatives under discussion were aimed at complying with sustainability goals, reducing energy consumption and streamlining the impact of their infrastructure on public spaces.

The companies noted that under any cooperation agreement, each would retain individual control over their commercial functions and customer management.
