The government of India has launched the Trusted Telecom Portal six months after the Union Cabinet approved the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector.

With effect from Tuesday (June 15), the telecom service providers (TSPs) are mandatorily required to connect only those new devices designated as ‘Trusted Products’ from ‘Trusted Sources’, the National Security Council Secretariat said in a statement.

The new portal - <http://www.trustedtelecom.gov.in> - underneath the Cyber wing of the National Security Council Secretariat will mandate telecom service suppliers to make use of gear through trusted or genuine sources solely.

The access will also be given to the respective vendors named by the telecom operators. "An assessment is made of the vendors and the sources of the components to determine trusted sources and trusted products which are then intimated to the vendor concerned and the applicant TSPs (telecom service providers) to make their procurements," the statement said. The portal has been developed and implemented by C-DoT, hosted by Railtel and dedicated staff of the NSCS with the support of telecom sector representatives.

The Cabinet on December 16 had accorded approval for the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector, which was to come into effect after 180 days of the date of approval.

The portal was developed and implemented by CDoT, an R&D unit of the government.

The improvement has come following the federal government’s efforts to make sure safety of telecom networks, particularly with the fifth technology (5G) service on the anvil. The initiative is broadly believed to discourage the usage of China-made gear within the nation’s core networks.
