The formal establishment of Ethiopia’s first-ever carrier-neutral hyperscale data centre park, located in the ICT Park, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, took place this week when wingu.africa, a pan-East African data centre operator based in Djibouti, broke ground on the development.

Local press reports say that the group, which has close to 10 years’ experience of developing and operating data centres in Africa, developed, owns and operates the Djibouti Data Centre, which is described as the most connected location on the African continent.

Its Addis Ababa facility is located inside the Ethio ICT Park on a 15,000 square metre piece of land, from which it will deliver flexible solutions to businesses requiring secure and fortified server hosting for their critical services, and operators wishing to have autonomy through secure ‘white space’ or their own separate modules on site.

Along with the new Addis Ababa hyperscale facility, a second facility is planned for Adama, a city in the central Oromia Region.

But wingu.africa is far from the only company operating in this space in Ethiopia. In late November last year RedFox Web Solutions, ScutiX and wingu.africa followed in the footsteps of Raxio Data Plc and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ethiopian Investment Commission to implement their data centres in the Ethio ICT Park. RedFox acquired 4,000 square metres and Scutix acquired 6,386 square metres.

[As we reported in October](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/data-centres-networks/10210-land-in-addis-ababa-confirmed-for-new-raxio-data-centre.html), the Raxio Ethiopia facility will be commissioned in Q3 2021. The new facility will accommodate an IT capacity of 1.5MW over the next few years, with the possibility of doubling capacity to 3MW as demand grows.
