STT Global Data Centres, one of the leading data centre operators in India, has announced plans to invest US$229 million in expanding its operational capacity in Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state in the country.

At the moment STT GDC India’s Chennai data centre network comprises three facilities, collectively offering over 45 MW of IT load capacity. This includes the STT Chennai 2 facility located on its Ambattur campus, one of India’s largest operational data centres, spanning approximately 37,160 square metres.

STT GDC India now aims to develop additional data centre capacity of up to 80 MW critical load in multiple phases over the next five to seven years across suitable locations in the state.

This investment, say STT GDC, will further solidify Tamil Nadu's position as a key data centre hub in India. The state already hosts data centres from major players like NTT, Yotta and CtrlS, making it a preferred destination for enterprises seeking reliable and secure data storage solutions.

STT GDC adds that this strategic move aligns with the company's expansion plans and capitalises on Tamil Nadu's economic pre-eminence and natural advantages. It says the state offers robust infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and a supportive government, rendering it an attractive destination for data centre development.

The company already has the largest footprint of data centres in the country as well as a global presence, with data centres in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and China, as well as India.
