A large number of Indian news outlets have been reporting that India, the US and Israel are now collaborating on 5G technology.

In fact a US official has been quoted as saying that the three countries have begun collaboration in the developmental area, and in the next generation of emerging technologies, including a transparent, open, reliable and secure 5G communication network.

It seems that the US-India-Israel forum members have already had (virtual) discussions on strategic, technology, development and water cooperation, and a collaboration on 5G is expected to be one of the results.

It is, however, according to a USAID official, the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to collaboration in science and research and development with the aim of coming up with the next generations of technologies. She referred in particular to the roles of Silicon Valley, Bangaluru and Tel Aviv as leading, innovative technology hubs.

There was also a reference to the three nations playing a key role in delivering the promise of 5G in a way that is open, interoperable, reliable, and secure, and not allowing any nation “to dominate this technology or use it to dominate other nations”.

The statements were certainly strong on optimistic, visionary assessments of the skills of the partners and the potential of any collaboration. However, it looks like we may have to wait a while for more technical or strategic detail.
