Israeli operator Bezeq made good on a pledge to expand its fibre optic network with the completion of its fibre optic rollout in the town of Metulla, marking the first community in Israel to be entirely connected to the operator’s fibre network.

In a statement, the operator said upon completion of the project, Metulla residents will be able to purchase broadband services up to 1Gbps, in the past residents were limited to 100Mbps services.

This announcement follows the operator announcing a “fast and aggressive” acceleration of its rollout of fibre network to [connect 1.5 million citizens](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/optical-fixed-networks/9996-bezeq-pledges-billions-for-fibre-optic-rollout.html) (60% of the population) to ultra-fast broadband, as demand rose with due to the Covid-19 health crisis.

Gil Sharon, Bezeq Chairman, said the company embarked on this investment drive to upgrade infrastructure to place itself in good stead for future revenue opportunities.

“Extensive and rapid deployment of the largest fibre-optic network in Israel will propel the country forward and contribute to its strength and economy.”

Dudu Mizrahi, Bezeq CEO bullishly said the rollout in Metulla was a “deceleration of intent” from the provider, as it plans to connect Israel from the north to south.

“We plan to deploy an advanced fibre-optic infrastructure from Metulla to Eilat, in the centre and the periphery, along the borders and within the interior of the country. The recent period has shown more than ever the need for a stable and quality broadband connection, and it is Bezeq's job to provide this to all Israel's residents."
