Cable technology supplier Nexans opened a new plant in Morocco for its telecoms business unit, a move to bolster its industrial capabilities to cater to the European and North African markets.

In a statement, Nexans said the Nexans Interface Maroc plant is located in the Nouaceur industrial acceleration zone, known as Midparc. It will produce fibre optic cable accessories to boost technologies such as fibre-to-the-home, 5G data centres and Local Area Network applications.

The company added the plant will enable it to “increase its production capacity”, expand product range, and offer new services.

This new site, built on 6,000m² of land, has 3,000m² of production workshop and will employ between 250 and 300 people by 2022. The Nexans Group currently has five sites in Morocco.

Julien Hueber, Nexans executive VP of Industry Solutions & Projects Business Group, said the investment into the plant enables the company to “pursue our development strategy” and tipped the North-West African market as a “high-growth region”.

"This new production unit illustrates the Group's desire to better serve its customers by improving our responsiveness, the quality of our products and by offering services with our telecom and datacom product range," added Hueber.

The inauguration of the plant was chaired by Minister of Industry, Trade, Green and Digital Economy, Moulay Hafid Elalamy, who said: "This new investment in Morocco of the industrial leader Nexans, in line with the European strategy of rationalisation of the supply chain, demonstrates the competitiveness of Morocco and the resilience of the national industrial sector in this context of crisis".

"This project will help meet the growing demand for advanced connectivity solutions and strengthen the positioning of the Moroccan industrial base on advanced technologies".
