Telkom Indonesia’s international arm Telin says it has broken ground for a new cable landing station at Pantai Mutiara in Jakarta for the Bifrost Cable System that will run between North America and Southeast Asia.

The 19,888-km Bifrost system, which has been [under construction since 2021](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/optical-fixed-networks/11126-asn-signs-up-to-build-bifrost-cable-system.html), is backed by Telin, Keppel Midgard Holdings (KMH), Meta and Amazon. The cable aims to connect the US and Mexico with Singapore – via intermediate landing points in Guam, Indonesia, and the Philippines – with a designed capacity of 10.4 Tbps.

The Bifrost cable will have landing points in Jakarta and Manado in North Sulawesi. Bogi Witjaksono, director of Wholesale & International Services at Telkom, said on Tuesday that the new cable landing station in Jakarta is unique in that it will also connect to Indonesia’s existing international gateway in Batam.

“This innovative route will enhance Telkom Group's network resilience and capacity \[and\] sets a reference for future projects and strengthens our global position,” he said in a statement.

Telin CEO Budi Satria D. Purba added, “With the Bifrost Cable System from Manado landing at this Jakarta CLS, Indonesia now has a second gateway, enhancing global connectivity and regional integration.”

The Bifrost cable was originally slated to be ready for service by the second quarter of this year, but that has been pushed back to early 2025. In April, according to media reports, executives at Converge ICT Solutions (which has partnered with KMH to build the Philippines branch of the Bifrost cable) [attributed the delay](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/optical-fixed-networks/16552-converge-ict-says-bifrost-sea-h2x-cables-may-be-delayed-to-2025.html) to bad weather and difficulty in acquiring the necessary permits in places like Indonesia.
