SpaceX announced its Starlink unit successfully completed sending and receiving a text message using T-Mobile network spectrum through one of its recently launched direct to phone satellites.

In a statement, SpaceX said there are still “several major challenges to overcome” in its ambition for a wider rollout of satellite connectivity for mobiles.

The company pointed to the advantage stationary cell towers have in being rooted, whereas satellites move at tens of thousands of miles per hour, requiring seamless handoffs between satellites.

The company stated: “Cell phones are also incredibly difficult to connect to satellites hundreds of kilometres away, given a mobile phone’s low antenna gain and transmit power.

“Starlink satellites with the Direct to Cell payload are equipped with innovative new custom silicon, phased array antennas, and advanced software algorithms that overcome these challenges and provide standard LTE service to cell phones on the ground.”

Last week, SpaceX [launched a constellation of satellites](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/satellite-communications-networks/16010-spacex-launches-starlink-satellites-that-connect-to-phones.html) that are specifically for beaming connectivity directly to mobile phones. Entel Chile were among many operators to sign up for access to the satellites.
