Transmode, a leading Scandinavian provider of optical networking solutions and NEC Corporation have announced global a partnership agreement.
Under the terms of the 5-year agreement NEC will resell Transmode's Metro WDM optical networking equipment globally on a non-exclusive basis. NEC believes the agreement will allow it to extend its customer offering significantly in the rapidly expanding wireless backhaul sector which is of particular relevance in emerging markets. There have not been any major installation of Transmode's technology outside Western Europe until now.
NEC are a leading Japanese based provider of technologies for microwave and long haul WDM solutions. These are complimentary with Trandmode's optical networking solutions.
Commenting on the agreement at MWC in Barcelona recently Mr. Yoichi Watanabe, Associate SVP and Executive General Manager International Carrier Solutions Operations Unit, NEC Corporation said "Optical fibre based networking solutions are playing an increasingly important role as network architectures in the access and metro continue to evolve to meet backhaul needs as well as end user requirements. NEC's market leading Microwave transmission systems along with our switching and aggregation portfolio and the partnership with Transmode allows us to address the needs of both fixed and mobile carriers."
A recent independent study the worldwide market for Metro WDM forecast the sector is set to grow from $3.7billon in 2008 to $5.4 billion in 2011. NEC currently claims to have a 30% market share of the wireless access / backhaul market, with over 350 Pasolink installations world-wide. It is aiming to increase this significantly with the new agreement.
According to Karl Thedéen, Transmode's CEO "The need to increase capacity in the optical networks is being driven by the exponential growth in all types of communications traffic. The partnership between NEC and Transmode creates a ready-made solution to that challenge. With these solutions, fixed and mobile carriers will be able to meet increased bandwidth demands from VDSL, HSPA, LTE and other high bandwidth technologies in a cost efficient way as they build out the optical networks."
"We are delighted to have signed a reseller agreement with NEC, as it will give Transmode a greater global reach and better access to large carriers and mobile operators in particular." Thedéen continued "We believe it is a perfect match both from a product and from a market point of view and will be yet another example of a successful cooperation between a Swedish and a Japanese company."
