Jordan’s Umniah has confirmed imminent plans to shutter its 2G network to allow further investment and more extensive upgrades to its 3G and 4G networks.

As reported by local outlet Zawya, the Bahraini-backed provider expects the move to deliver superior call quality and faster data rates to its subscribers, as well as overall improved coverage and network stability.

TeleGeography notes that Umniah is spinning the move as beneficial to users of older smarpthones, claiming that they will be pushed to replace their devices with “more effective and innovative” models that support 3G and 4G.

The operator’s CEO Ziad Shatara said: “Our focus on our 3G and 4G networks will allow us to exponentially expand the available resources, pairing them with more advanced technologies that improve the quality of our network and give our subscribers a more comprehensive experience, ultimately ensuring that everyone communicates smoothly at all times.”
