Indonesian state-owned provider PT Telekom is planning the launch of several MVNOs in the Middle East aimed at Indonesians based in the region.

CEO Arief Yahya said that the firm would achieve this goal via cooperation with local mobile operators via its international arm, Telin (PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International), saying “our principle is that we will always follow the money, the people, the traffic and the network.”

Currently around 1 million Indonesians are employed in Saudi Arabia alone, with a similar number visiting the country at any one time. Indonesian overseas workers sent around $7.41 billion back home last year, and Arief believes that Telin could earn revenue “worth trillions of rupiah” from these remittances.

The operator is also keen to form partnerships with venture capital firms in Silicon Valley as a means of increasing its competitiveness in the international digital services space.

Arief has announced a tie-up with VC firm Fenox Venture Capital, and has indicated that more agreements are in the pipeline, saying “We are committed to investing $200 million, which we intend to boost the national creative digital industry. In the big picture, this will contribute to Indonesia’s economic growth.”
